Update - New Blog

Hi everyone! So as you know, I love country music and have even been able to use this blog to interview some great up and coming artists! However, I do realize that this topic is slightly different from the content on Lauren Rose, so I am so excited to announce that I have created another blog for all things country music called The California Boot. I will have all of my previous interviews uploaded there as well as some exciting new ones that are in the works. If country music is an interest of yours, I highly recommend you check it out and follow me on twitter! I'm still in the process of getting it exactly the way I want, but it's coming along nicely. I hope you all are having a great week - I'm off to Hawaii and have some fun posts to put on this blog that I can't wait for you all to see!

Angel Food Cupcakes

I made the best summer dessert for my mom's birthday and needed to share it with you all! Normally I have to wait at least an hour after dinner before I can dive into dessert, but these angel food cupcakes with whipped cream and berries were so light that we were able to eat them right after dinner. I got the recipe here, but put my own little twist on it. If any of you try out this recipe, be sure to leave me a comment or tweet me a picture!

- 1 box Betty Crocker white angel food cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water

- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla bean paste
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- mint leaves and powdered sugar for decoration

1. Preheat oven to 375 F and place paper baking cups in a muffin tin.
2. In a large bowl, beat cake mix and water with a mixer on low speed for 30 seconds; then on medium speed for 1 minute. Pour batter into muffin cups, filling each 3/4 full.
3. Bake 12-20 minutes (mine took 12). You will know they are done when the tops are a dark golden brown color and have cracks that feel dry. Then move the cupcakes to a cooling rack.
4. In a medium bowl, beat whipping cream with a mixer on medium-high speed until slightly thickened. Reduce speed; add sugar and vanilla paste. Increase speed and mix until stiff peaks form. Put whipped cream into a decorating bag, or just spoon some onto the tops of each cupcake.
5. Add fresh berries and some mint to the tops of the cupcakes and then dust with a little powdered sugar.

Waterproof Summer Drugstore Makeup

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

In the summertime, I like to wear as little makeup as possible. Why spend time in front of a mirror when you could be spending it on the beach? That being said, I do like to wear a little bit depending on what I'm doing that day. These are my top 6 must have summer drugstore products that I've already been using and will continue to use throughout the next few months. Plus, these products are mostly waterproof so you can wear this look on the beach or at the pool as well! Be sure to leave a comment letting me know your favorite makeup products for the summertime!

1. Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream: BB Cream is perfect for the summer because it's so light - unlike foundation, it won't feel heavy on your face when you're sweating. I especially like this one because it has 2% salicylic acid, which means not only will it not break you out, but it will also prevent future breakouts.

2. NYX Cream Blush: I prefer cream blush to powder blush any day because I think it looks so much more natural. It will also stay on better in the summer heat as well.

3. Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Big Eyes Mascara Waterproof: I have used this mascara for years and is hands down my all time favorite. It doesn't make my lashes clumpy and it actually makes my natural lashes look false. For summertime, the waterproof one is amazing and this new version has a bigger end for top lashes and a smaller end for bottom lashes - genius!

4. Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Pencil: This gel eyeliner has a very easy application and lasts a very long time. It's also waterproof so you can wear it at the beach or pool!

5. Sonia Kashuk Moisture Luxe Tinted Lip Balm: This lip balm is very moisturizing and long lasting. Plus the colors that it comes in are all perfect summer shades!

6. NYX Butter Gloss: I couldn't not include my favorite lip gloss in this post! The butter glosses are my favorite lip glosses all year around - they are long lasting and are not sticky.

Interview with Olivia Lane

Olivia Lane is one of the fastest growing female names in country music today. Since the last time I spoke to her in January, her music video for "Steal Me Away" debuted on CMT.com.  She was also selected for the Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star national campaign, hosted a series called "Diva Jam", embarked on a national radio tour, and is set to release her new single "You Part 2" in early June. This summer she will be on the road opening up for acts such as Kip Moore and Easton Corbin, and even plans to release an acoustic mixed tape.

1. I know your new single “You Part 2” is about to be released to country radio, what’s the story behind that song?

It’s actually based on a true story in my personal life. It’s about a guy I dated in college. The song is kind of like a sassy, up-tempo song about moving on after a break up and having a stronger sense of who you are. So, I’m also happy to be a strong female presence on the radio. It has sort of been the song that everyone’s jelling with, so it’s cool.

2. How was it being selected for the prestigious Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star national campaign?

It was great! I was the highest ranked female country artist. It really gave me a lot of exposure and recognition as an artist and I’m so happy that they do that for new artists – it’s cool.

3. I also know you’re hosting a music series called “Diva Jam”, could you tell me a little bit about that?

It started last year and I really wanted to support females in country music. I really wanted to get the conversation going and how we should want females in country music. And what better way than to have a show that’s all female base? You know,  bro-country is happening so why can’t diva country happen? It's called Diva Jam and we’re doing it again at CMA Fest this year and I just can’t wait!

4. Are there any upcoming projects that you can talk about or let us know what’s coming next?

Yeah! I’m deciding to come out with an acoustic mixed tape of all of my songs. There will be 11 or 12 songs acoustically – they aren’t the full-blown songs. I’m thinking it will come out in late July.

5. What are your plans for the summer?

I’ll be on the road and promoting “You Part 2", and I’m also opening for some awesome people like Kip Moore and Easton Corbin, and so we have a lot of great stuff happening on the road.

Make sure to check out Olivia here:

What I Eat and Do For Exercise

It's that time of year again! The time when the weather gets warmer and people head to the beach. However, this also means that it's swimsuit season. Before I get any further into this post, I think the best thing you can wear on the beach is confidence. I don't think anyone should have to get a "beach body" for summer - as long as you're comfortable and confident, that's all that matters. Personally, I feel most confident when I'm eating healthy and exercising, so today I'm sharing some of my favorite foods and exercise tips!

What I Eat

I am super big on fruits and vegetables being the foundation for my meals. Not only do they provide the nutrients that your body needs to function properly, but I just feel better after eating them.

For breakfast, I like to have greek yogurt and a banana, wheat toast with peanut butter, oatmeal, or eggs with avocado. All of these keep me full for a few hours and have nutritional benefits.

For lunch, I normally have a salad or sandwich. For my salads, I get spinach and add carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, quinoa, feta, chickpeas, kidney beans, avocado, croutons, raisins, and asian dressing on top. It sounds like a weird mixture, but I promise it's delicious!
If I get a sandwich, I'll have wheat bread with mustard, turkey, spinach, tomato, and avocado.

For dinner, I like to switch it up. Sometimes I'll get brown rice with chicken, a salad with salmon, soup and toast, or just whatever I feel in the mood for. Dinner is also the meal that I like to eat out for as well, so it's never really the same.

As far as snacks go, fruit is a favorite of mine. I have really been liking apples with almond butter as well as Quest bars (the oreo one is my favorite). I find that these fill me up and hold me over until my next meal!

For Exercise

I have never been super into the gym. Some people can go to the gym and get a great workout with weights and cardio, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do that. Instead, I love running. I ran track in high school, and even though I'm no where near as fast as I was, running is still something that I enjoy doing.

One of my sorority sisters recently introduced me to an app that I have been obsessed with! It's called Runkeeper and it's free in the App Store. It keeps track of distance, time, and calories burned, plus it's super easy to use! I have an example of the summary it gives after a workout below. I like to run 3 to 4 times a week, depending on how much time I have.

I have also been going to an hour long yoga class once a week and I love it. I am so relaxed after and I can definitely tell that my arms and upper body are getting more toned. If you haven't tried yoga, I 100% recommend it!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

One of my favorite ways to spend a night out in the spring and summertime is at a baseball game! Something about being in the warm night air with a churro cheering on your home team makes this time of year so much better! With opening day being last week, I wanted to do a post about America's favorite pastime. Here is something I would wear (will wear) when I make it to a game this season!

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

A night out can be expensive, but going to a baseball game is money well spent in my opinion. Eventbrite did a great survey outlining how much people spend on a night out, which is super interesting! I thought it would be fun to compare how much a night out at a baseball game is compared to an average night out!

Because I'm from San Diego, I love cheering on the Padres. Petco Park is absolutely gorgeous and right next to the water. Since I don't live in the city, we usually take the train downtown and then walk to the park from there. This cuts down on transportation costs, such as Uber or a taxi.

Tickets are somewhat expensive, but if you purchase them in advance and don't mind having the best seat in the house, you can find them for an affordable price! Places like Eventbrite have awesome opportunities for buying and selling tickets for a great price as well!

The best part of a ball game in my opinion is the food. Of course, if you're over 21, drinks are also fun! Some of it is overpriced, but I'd say it was pretty average, as the average person spends $10 on late night food and $26 on drinks on a night out.

Overall, ball games are a great way to spend a summer night out. The price is pretty comparable to other ways of spending a night out, plus this is one that all ages can attend and enjoy!

Play ball!

Interview with Bethany Becker

Image taken from here

Meet Bethany Becker! She is a young country artist on the rise that is full of talent. She has already worked with Liz Rose, the woman behind some of Taylor Swift's big hits. I was so excited to ask her a few questions about her life and career.

1. Have you always known that music is what you wanted to pursue as a career?
Pretty much! At least since I was about seven and realized that becoming a princess wasn’t really an option. Once I fell in love with music the desire to pursue it professionally never went away.
2. How would you describe the style of your music and where do you get your inspiration?
My music walks the line between country and pop. My goal for my music is for it to be relatable and real, so I pull inspiration from my life and the lives of the people around me. A lot of the inspiration for the songs on my “Maybe More” EP came from very specific events and experiences from my life.
3. What is your favorite part about working in the music industry?
Getting to pour my heart into songs that I’m able to perform and share with the world. Also, watching all my biggest dreams become reality!
4. I know you wrote a song with Liz Rose, who has also worked with Taylor Swift. What was that experience like?
Honestly, I was a little star struck! I’m such a big fan of Liz’s work, so the fact that I got to write a song with her is crazy! She’s an excellent writer and a super sweet person.
5. Is there anyone in the industry today that you look up to or want to model your career after?
I’ve always really looked up to Taylor Swift. Her writing is amazing, and I admire her honesty and vulnerability in her music and her relationship with her fans. I miss her country music, but all she has been able to accomplish in the music industry at such a young age is just incredible.
6. Is there anything you can share right now about an upcoming album or single?
I have a new single on the way that I’m super excited about! I’m keeping a lot of details a secret, so I can’t say too much, but I will tell you that it is a message I really think needs to be said and heard. There’s also a music video for the song coming that I will be shooting very soon. I may also have a full album in the works J
7. What is a little known or fun fact about you?
Before I was born, the doctor said I was going to be a boy. My mom had had a boy baby shower and everything. My parents were very surprised when I wasn’t!

My Spring Break

I took this while flying into San Diego! I know I'm biased, but I just love my city and think it's so pretty!

My family and I spent the night in Palm Desert and stayed at the most beautiful resort. They even had a boat in the lobby that takes you to some nice restaurants. It was impressive to say the least!

I took this of our hotel at night. The lights and pool were so pretty and it was the perfect getaway for us. I would highly recommend the JW Marriott in Palm Desert if any of you ever visit!

I bought these sunglasses from the J. Crew Factory store for $12 over spring break and wore them every single day. I absolutely love them! Apparently Sophie needed a pair too - her eyes are closed in this because the sun was so bright!

This is what the rest of my spring break looked like! I am so lucky to live 5 minutes from this gorgeous beach. Being away at college makes coming home to this that much sweeter. I spent the second half of the week here swimming in the waves and soaking up the sun. The weather could not have been more perfect.

My last day at home, my parents and I went down to our favorite breakfast spot - an old train station by the beach that has been turned into a bakery/restaurant. My almond croissant and iced coffee were too pretty to not take a picture.

This was hands down one of the best weeks. I am so lucky and grateful to live in such a beautiful place with people I love. I hope you all had a wonderful week as well!

Basic Beach Essentials

I had the most wonderful day at the beach yesterday and wanted to share! I have been lucky enough to grow up by the beach and through trial and error, learned what to bring and what not to bring. These are the must-have items that I have found necessary for enjoying the waves and sand!

1. A nice beach bag that is big enough to throw everything in is so important! Mine is from Nordstrom and wasn't too expensive. It's a good idea to bring one that you don't mind getting a little sand in.

2. Flip Flops are a must! They are so easy to slip on and off and protect your feet from the hot sand. An inexpensive pair is the way to go - I'm almost positive these were $10 from Target!

3. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I love this Neutrogena one with SPF 30 for my face. I can still get tan without getting burned, plus it's waterproof!

4. A hair tie is so important for me since the salt water makes my hair super frizzy. I use this to throw my hair into a bun after taking a dip in the ocean. You can also braid your hair after it's wet and then let it dry to create beautiful beach waves!

5. This is the sunscreen I like to use on my body. It is a low SPF (8), but it prevents sunburns and does allow me to get a tan. Plus this one has argan oil which is super moisturizing!

6. I just bought these sunglasses from the J. Crew factory store and love them! They were only $12 and protect my eyes from the harsh sunlight that reflects off the sand and water. Sunglasses are a must!

Other things that I like to bring are headphones to listen to music and a great book or magazine to pass the time. Let me know if you're heading to the beach soon for spring break or summer and what you like to bring!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all had a great week - I was trying to enjoy mine these past few days because now it's time to study for finals. These are some of my favorite things at the moment - enjoy!

1.  I'm not gonna lie - this video got to me! My roommate sent this to me knowing it was something I'd love and she was right. The ending had me in tears - you did good Samsung!

2. The new arrivals from Reddress Boutique! I know I talk about them a lot, but they are one of my favorite online boutiques. This week was filled with new items for St. Patrick's Day. I especially love this dress and this clutch.

3. These dark chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's have been a staple this week. They aren't exactly the healthiest, but my mom sent them to me in a care package and I cannot stop eating them!

4. The Bachelor finale was this week and oh my goodness I could barely handle it. I'm not going to say the winner in case some of you have yet to watch it, but let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Have a lovely weekend!

WCW: Emma Watson

“Beauty is not long hair, skinny legs, tanned skin or perfect teeth. Believe me. Beauty is the face of who cried and now smiles, beauty is the scar on your knee since you fell when you were a kid, beauty is the circles when love doesn’t let you sleep, beauty is the expression on the face when the alarm rings in the morning, it’s the melted makeup when you have a shower, it’s the laughter when you make a joke you’re the only one who can understand, beauty is meeting his gaze and stopping understanding, beauty is your gaze when you see him, it’s when you cry for all you paranoias, beauty is the lines marked by time. Beauty is what we feel in the inside which also shows outside us. Beauty is the marks the life leaves on us, all the kicks and the caresses the memories leave us. Beauty is letting yourself live.”
          ― Emma Watson

image taken from here

Happy Wednesday everyone! After seeing this quote from Emma Watson, I wanted to share it with you all! Being a girl in today's society is hard. The standards of physical beauty that women are expected to achieve are often unattainable. It's an everyday practice to complain about flaws and dwell on features we would like to change. Perfection is something that people are striving for and unfortunately, it cannot be reached. We make beauty so much more complicated than it needs to be.
Life is much more fulfilling when the focus shifts from beauty being defined as physical attractiveness to an entire array of things. Emma Watson is my woman crush wednesday today because of how she defines beauty (not to mention, her outfit in the photo above is on point). She is highly educated and uses her powerful voice for gender equality. The people in my life that I find the most beautiful are the ones who are chasing big dreams, who get knocked down but then get back up, who find the beauty in every day, and the ones who are using their voice to help others. I am challenging myself, as well as all of you, to be Emma Watson beautiful!

Skin Care Routine

1. Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser: Although I only started using this recently, this is hands down my favorite cleanser! It is gentle enough to use daily and does not leave my face feeling stripped of moisture. I would highly recommend this if you are on the search for a good cleanser!

2. Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer: This is actually the product that inspired me to do this post because I love it so much! I have been using it every morning and night for over 5 years now, and it was actually recommended to me by my dermatologist. If you have dry skin, this is a must! Aveeno also makes this same moisturizer with SPF, which I would also recommend.

3. St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub: This is my favorite exfoliant. I use this about once or twice a week to get all the dead skin cells off. It smells very fresh and leaves my skin feeling super soft; however, you wouldn't want to use this more than twice a week since it is pretty harsh.

4. Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner: This is my favorite toner because it is alcohol-free. I find that it does not strip my skin like most other toners do that contain alcohol. I just apply it with a cotton pad after using my cleanser to remove any remaining dirt or makeup.

5. Tea Tree Face Mask: I like to use this face mask once a week. I feel like using face masks is one of those little pleasures in life that make me feel pampered. It might not make a huge difference in my skin, but I feel like it does do something.

6. L'Oreal Eye Defense: I am only 19, but I have been using eye cream for about a year to prevent wrinkles in the future, help with puffiness and dark circles, and keep my eye area moisturized in general. This one is extremely moisturizing and I would highly recommend it; however, I don't have wrinkles yet, so I don't know if it helps with that, but I imagine it would!

7. Tea Tree Oil: I like using tea tree oil as a spot treatment for any acne. I find that it does help spots heal faster and it's all natural!

Spring Swimsuits

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

With less than 3 weeks left of school, spring break is the only thing on my mind! I cannot wait to go home and spend hours at the beach and pool. One of my favorite parts about the spring time is stocking up on a few new swimsuits. This year, I am loving the bright colors and florals. Lilly Pulitzer 2015

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

I was recently browsing the Lilly Pulitzer website and fell in love with so many of their looks - the colors and prints are getting me excited for spring. I picked my four favorites, but you should all definitely go check out the website for more! All of these would be perfect if you're going to a nice dinner or resort over spring break this year.
