Interview with Olivia Lane

Texas-native Olivia Lane is on track to becoming one of the hottest country artists on the radio today. Her passion and drive for what she does is apparent in her music as well as in her mindset as a woman in the industry. Her music video for “Steal Me Away” was recently released, and she is already working on another album that’s due out soon. I was fortunate enough to talk to Olivia on the phone while she was in Florida on a radio tour to discuss her music, career, and more.

1. What made you want to pursue music as a career? Did you always know that’s what you wanted to do?
I think from a very young age, my mom saw that I was this kid with this crazy, loud voice and all this energy, so she put me in community theater, choir, a cappella, and church choir, and all these things exposed me to music. She was actually a Texas regional country singer, so she sort of saw that artist tendency in me. She put me in all these artistic kinds of things and it completely opened up my world. So from about the age of 6 or 7, I knew that being an artist was what I was going to be. I got to college and really dove into songwriting around my sophomore year, and I really fell in love with it and I was like, “You know what? I love country music, I love songwriting, I should go to Nashville”. So I had a dramatic life change. I was like I need to go to Nashville, it’s what I need to do and I spent my summers interning in Nashville when I was in college and then I graduated about a year and a half ago and packed up my car and drove straight to Nashville.

2. How would you describe the style of your music and where do you get your inspiration?
The style of my music is definitely today’s country – country pop and very up-tempo, very inspiring, all about following your dreams. I’m very cheesy in that sort of way. But it’s really fun; hopefully it makes you smile. A lot of my influences range from artists like Sara Evans, Trisha Yearwood, and Reba McEntire. I also like James Taylor, The Eagles, and very singer-songwriter type of stuff.

3. What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
So far, just hearing “Steal Me Away” on the radio driving in my car. It wasn’t planned; it wasn’t like ‘Oh, they’re going to play it at this time, go listen in your car’. It was a spontaneous thing, just listening to the radio at random and hearing my song. It was so surreal and it’s funny because all your friends start to message you like ‘Hey, I heard your song on the radio!’ and it’s like ‘What is happening? I’m on the radio and this is crazy’.

4. Are there any upcoming projects in 2015 that you can share or talk about yet?
We are working on another 3-song EP that’s coming out and we’re working towards basically a full album. We’re not sure when it’s going to come out, but I’m really excited about this next EP coming out. We have one called “Love Thing” that’s on iTunes right now and then we have about 8 songs on deck to be put out there in the world, but we haven’t put them on iTunes yet. We’re working on the music videos and getting all prepared, so it’s exciting.

5. Is there anyone in the industry today that you look up to or that you would like to model your career after?
I would love to model my career after someone like Dolly Parton or Reba because not only did they take over the music world, but they also have so many other paths that they’re doing like opening their own theme park and Reba has her own TV show. I mean Taylor Swift is sort of dabbling in it as well, you know, with movies. I would honestly love to have my own sitcom, it would be so cool, but one step at a time. Reba has her own studio in Nashville; I would just love to be a businesswoman on top of doing my music.

6. Last but not least, since fashion is a main part of my blog, do you have a go-to outfit or style when it comes to performing on stage?
My go to outfit is a free people kind of dress that flatters my waist, leggings, and 3-inch high knee boots and big hoop earrings. I’m just a dress girl; I love dresses.
