Some Random Thoughts

Whenever I tell people where I'm at in life, the response is usually the same. They tell me what an exciting time this must be and how I have the power to be and do anything. Being 21 means that I am now a young adult; I'm the one calling the shots. And while this is empowering and exciting, it's also freaking terrifying.

I still don't know what I want to do in life or what my purpose is. I am graduating with a degree that I am starting to second guess, I don't know what city I'll be living in after June, and I don't know what kind of career I will be diving into. I don't know where my friends will be living or how often we'll get to see each other. It's a very strange feeling to have so much unplanned; it's something that is very foreign to me.

But even though I am extremely overwhelmed, I also know that a great adventure lies ahead. There is beauty in the unknown. I am going to meet new people, explore new places, and have more experiences that will continue to shape me and allow me to grow into the person that I am meant to be. What I have realized is that there is a unique path for us all. In this digital age, it is so easy to compare myself to my friends and what they are doing. I am constantly questioning different aspects of my life, but at the end of the day that isn't doing anything beneficial. I have to trust myself and my own path.

I know it's been awhile since I've posted on this blog, but I have missed it so much. I want to use this space to document what it's like to be in my 20s in this day and age as well as look back to see how it all eventually worked out.

Update - New Blog

Hi everyone! So as you know, I love country music and have even been able to use this blog to interview some great up and coming artists! However, I do realize that this topic is slightly different from the content on Lauren Rose, so I am so excited to announce that I have created another blog for all things country music called The California Boot. I will have all of my previous interviews uploaded there as well as some exciting new ones that are in the works. If country music is an interest of yours, I highly recommend you check it out and follow me on twitter! I'm still in the process of getting it exactly the way I want, but it's coming along nicely. I hope you all are having a great week - I'm off to Hawaii and have some fun posts to put on this blog that I can't wait for you all to see!

Angel Food Cupcakes

I made the best summer dessert for my mom's birthday and needed to share it with you all! Normally I have to wait at least an hour after dinner before I can dive into dessert, but these angel food cupcakes with whipped cream and berries were so light that we were able to eat them right after dinner. I got the recipe here, but put my own little twist on it. If any of you try out this recipe, be sure to leave me a comment or tweet me a picture!

Ingredients:
CUPCAKES
- 1 box Betty Crocker white angel food cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water

WHIPPED CREAM
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla bean paste
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- mint leaves and powdered sugar for decoration

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 F and place paper baking cups in a muffin tin.
2. In a large bowl, beat cake mix and water with a mixer on low speed for 30 seconds; then on medium speed for 1 minute. Pour batter into muffin cups, filling each 3/4 full.
3. Bake 12-20 minutes (mine took 12). You will know they are done when the tops are a dark golden brown color and have cracks that feel dry. Then move the cupcakes to a cooling rack.
4. In a medium bowl, beat whipping cream with a mixer on medium-high speed until slightly thickened. Reduce speed; add sugar and vanilla paste. Increase speed and mix until stiff peaks form. Put whipped cream into a decorating bag, or just spoon some onto the tops of each cupcake.
5. Add fresh berries and some mint to the tops of the cupcakes and then dust with a little powdered sugar.

Waterproof Summer Drugstore Makeup

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

In the summertime, I like to wear as little makeup as possible. Why spend time in front of a mirror when you could be spending it on the beach? That being said, I do like to wear a little bit depending on what I'm doing that day. These are my top 6 must have summer drugstore products that I've already been using and will continue to use throughout the next few months. Plus, these products are mostly waterproof so you can wear this look on the beach or at the pool as well! Be sure to leave a comment letting me know your favorite makeup products for the summertime!

1. Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream: BB Cream is perfect for the summer because it's so light - unlike foundation, it won't feel heavy on your face when you're sweating. I especially like this one because it has 2% salicylic acid, which means not only will it not break you out, but it will also prevent future breakouts.

2. NYX Cream Blush: I prefer cream blush to powder blush any day because I think it looks so much more natural. It will also stay on better in the summer heat as well.

3. Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Big Eyes Mascara Waterproof: I have used this mascara for years and is hands down my all time favorite. It doesn't make my lashes clumpy and it actually makes my natural lashes look false. For summertime, the waterproof one is amazing and this new version has a bigger end for top lashes and a smaller end for bottom lashes - genius!

4. Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Pencil: This gel eyeliner has a very easy application and lasts a very long time. It's also waterproof so you can wear it at the beach or pool!

5. Sonia Kashuk Moisture Luxe Tinted Lip Balm: This lip balm is very moisturizing and long lasting. Plus the colors that it comes in are all perfect summer shades!

6. NYX Butter Gloss: I couldn't not include my favorite lip gloss in this post! The butter glosses are my favorite lip glosses all year around - they are long lasting and are not sticky.

Interview with Olivia Lane

Olivia Lane is one of the fastest growing female names in country music today. Since the last time I spoke to her in January, her music video for "Steal Me Away" debuted on CMT.com.  She was also selected for the Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star national campaign, hosted a series called "Diva Jam", embarked on a national radio tour, and is set to release her new single "You Part 2" in early June. This summer she will be on the road opening up for acts such as Kip Moore and Easton Corbin, and even plans to release an acoustic mixed tape.

1. I know your new single “You Part 2” is about to be released to country radio, what’s the story behind that song?

It’s actually based on a true story in my personal life. It’s about a guy I dated in college. The song is kind of like a sassy, up-tempo song about moving on after a break up and having a stronger sense of who you are. So, I’m also happy to be a strong female presence on the radio. It has sort of been the song that everyone’s jelling with, so it’s cool.

2. How was it being selected for the prestigious Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star national campaign?

It was great! I was the highest ranked female country artist. It really gave me a lot of exposure and recognition as an artist and I’m so happy that they do that for new artists – it’s cool.

3. I also know you’re hosting a music series called “Diva Jam”, could you tell me a little bit about that?

It started last year and I really wanted to support females in country music. I really wanted to get the conversation going and how we should want females in country music. And what better way than to have a show that’s all female base? You know,  bro-country is happening so why can’t diva country happen? It's called Diva Jam and we’re doing it again at CMA Fest this year and I just can’t wait!

4. Are there any upcoming projects that you can talk about or let us know what’s coming next?

Yeah! I’m deciding to come out with an acoustic mixed tape of all of my songs. There will be 11 or 12 songs acoustically – they aren’t the full-blown songs. I’m thinking it will come out in late July.

5. What are your plans for the summer?

I’ll be on the road and promoting “You Part 2", and I’m also opening for some awesome people like Kip Moore and Easton Corbin, and so we have a lot of great stuff happening on the road.

Make sure to check out Olivia here:

What I Eat and Do For Exercise

It's that time of year again! The time when the weather gets warmer and people head to the beach. However, this also means that it's swimsuit season. Before I get any further into this post, I think the best thing you can wear on the beach is confidence. I don't think anyone should have to get a "beach body" for summer - as long as you're comfortable and confident, that's all that matters. Personally, I feel most confident when I'm eating healthy and exercising, so today I'm sharing some of my favorite foods and exercise tips!

What I Eat

I am super big on fruits and vegetables being the foundation for my meals. Not only do they provide the nutrients that your body needs to function properly, but I just feel better after eating them.

For breakfast, I like to have greek yogurt and a banana, wheat toast with peanut butter, oatmeal, or eggs with avocado. All of these keep me full for a few hours and have nutritional benefits.

For lunch, I normally have a salad or sandwich. For my salads, I get spinach and add carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, quinoa, feta, chickpeas, kidney beans, avocado, croutons, raisins, and asian dressing on top. It sounds like a weird mixture, but I promise it's delicious!
If I get a sandwich, I'll have wheat bread with mustard, turkey, spinach, tomato, and avocado.

For dinner, I like to switch it up. Sometimes I'll get brown rice with chicken, a salad with salmon, soup and toast, or just whatever I feel in the mood for. Dinner is also the meal that I like to eat out for as well, so it's never really the same.

As far as snacks go, fruit is a favorite of mine. I have really been liking apples with almond butter as well as Quest bars (the oreo one is my favorite). I find that these fill me up and hold me over until my next meal!

For Exercise

I have never been super into the gym. Some people can go to the gym and get a great workout with weights and cardio, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do that. Instead, I love running. I ran track in high school, and even though I'm no where near as fast as I was, running is still something that I enjoy doing.

One of my sorority sisters recently introduced me to an app that I have been obsessed with! It's called Runkeeper and it's free in the App Store. It keeps track of distance, time, and calories burned, plus it's super easy to use! I have an example of the summary it gives after a workout below. I like to run 3 to 4 times a week, depending on how much time I have.

I have also been going to an hour long yoga class once a week and I love it. I am so relaxed after and I can definitely tell that my arms and upper body are getting more toned. If you haven't tried yoga, I 100% recommend it!
